There are 23 events at the Division B level and 23 events at the Division C level.

Regional Tournaments

The official events that run at the Regional Tournaments may vary among regions. Please contact each Regional Coordinator for the appropriate information.

2020 Ornithology B/C Regional Tournaments:
Many of the birds on the Nationals List are native to New York State.
The entire National List will be used at the B Division and C Division Regional Tournaments. No additional birds will be included on the Regional Level.

All 23 events listed will run at each of the State Tournaments.

2020 Ornithology B/C State Tournaments:
For the B Division and the C Division State Tournaments, the entire National List will be used along with the addition of these eight NY birds:
1. Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) Order Anseriformes
2. Common merganser (Mergus merganser) Order Anseriformes
3. Red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) Order Piciformes
4. Song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) Order Passeriformes
5. Northern saw-whet owl (Aegolius acadicus) Order Strigiformes ♪
6. House finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) Order Passeriformes
7. Purple finch (Haemorhous purpureus) Order Passeriformes
8. Swainson’s thrush (Catharus ustulatus) Order Passeriformes


Only students from the official 15 member team may participate in the 23 official events.

Trial Event List and Resources

Regional Tournaments

The trial events may or may not run at Regional Tournaments.  Please contact each regional coordinator for the appropriate information.

State Tournaments

The trial events will run at each of the State Tournaments.


Any student from a school, including students who are not part of the 15 official team members, may participate in trial events.

Students who participate in trial events and who are not one of the 15 official team members shall be designated : “Alternates”.

For schools with multiple teams, alternates must be affiliated with a specific team (i.e., “Team A; Alternates”).

Trial events may consist of official team members, alternates, or a combination of the two. As with official events, students competing together in a trial event must be from the same team (i.e., Smith H.S. Team A).

Any participant competing in a trial event must be the same participant competing throughout the entirety of that trial event.

Medals will be awarded to the top finishers in trial events as they are official events.

​Trial events will not count towards a team’s overall point score.

Please note: Any team penalties that are incurred during trial events will be enforced against the participant’s team.
