Dear Science Olympiad Coach,

Townsend Harris High School cordially invites you to join us for a Science Olympiad Build-A-Thon Invitational Tournament on Saturday, January 23, 2010 from 8:00 AM - 12:00 noon. This Invitational is a great way for new coaches to get a little experience in some events prior to competing in the Regional competition, and for experienced coaches to get their students motivated in events prior to the Regional competitions. The goal of Build-A-Thon Invitational is to provide students with an opportunity to test their devices in a competition similar to Regionals, receive feedback, and still have time to modify, test, and/or rebuild their constructions prior to the Regional event.

The six building events we are planning to run are: Elevated Bridge, Helicopter Duration, Mission Possible, Mousetrap Vehicle, SumoBots, and Trajectory. Teams may participate in any number of these events from as few as one to all six. We ask that the coaches of each participating team help run the events. We will try to have additional people to assist in running the events but this can not be guaranteed. Also, you should bring personnel to supervise your team/students while you are running your event. If you have a preference as to which event you would like to run, please indicate that on your registration form. Events will be assigned on a first come basis. If you are a new team/coach, please contact me with any concerns about running an event.

The registration fee for the Build-A-Thon Invitational will be $20 per team. The fee will cover medals, team awards, and facilities. Registration will be limited to the first 20 teams. Spaces will be reserved as payment is received. No purchase orders can be accepted. At the awards ceremony, teams will receive a copy of the overall results for each event so they can see how their device performed. Medals will be given for first, second, and third place in each event. Team awards will be given to the top three teams. To be considered for a team award, a team must have participated in at least four events. Registrations must be received by Jan. 4, 2010.

This will be an opportunity to let your students practice in a safe, friendly environment, get any help needed, and swap information with other coaches. If you are interested in attending, please fill out the attached registration and vandalism form and send it with your registration fee to:
