The State Competition in New York consists of all of the official Science Olympiad events plus two Trial events and (for 2011) one Pilot Event in Division B. Trial/Pilot events are included to allow teams to provide feedback on which events they would like to see added to the National competition. To insure that the Trial events receive a fair assessment, the points received by each team in these events count towards the determination of the State Champion. The Pilot Event, on the other hand, will not count towards a teams final total. Any student from a school may compete in the Pilot Event (not just the 15 members of the team), and medals will be awarded. For the 2010 - 2011 school year, the Trial/Pilot events included in the New York State Competition are:
B-Division:
MagLev: Students will build up to two self-propelled “vehicles” powered by electrical energy supplied by batteries. The energy supplied by the batteries will be used to turn a propeller(s) and move the vehicle down a magnetic track. Resources for this event can be found here.
Sumo Bots: Prior to the competition, students must design and construct a competing robot (bot) that will attempt to force an opponent’s robot from a defined arena. Please be sure to check the Rules Clarifications page often.
Helicopter: Teams will construct and test free flight rubber-powered helicopters to achieve maximum flight times. Please be sure to check the Rules Clarifications page often. This is a Pilot Event: students other than the 15 team members may compete. The event will be scored and medals will be awarded, but the results will not count towards the team's final score.
C-Division:
Magnetic Levitation: Students will build up to two self-propelled “vehicles” powered by electrical energy supplied by batteries. The energy supplied by the batteries will be used to turn a propeller(s) and move the vehicle down a magnetic track. Students will also answer questions about magnetism, magnets, and their uses. Resources for this event can be found here.
Bottle Rocket: Rules will be posted at the end of September
